Digital Tranformation: Success Model Digital Business

Benno Burkhardt (*14. January 1972) has been a manager and serial entrepreneur in the digital industry for over 20 years[6] . He got his start in the digital business during his 7-year tenure on the management board of Scout24, which during his time became the dominant[1][4] Swiss platform for digital classifieds. He then used this know-how to repeat the Scout24 success story several times for the Ringier Group in Eastern Europe and Asia. After that, as CEO at Gate24 and Publicitas, he digitized the print-heavy product portfolios and led the sales organizations through the first digital transformations. At Comparis he was the first CEO[2] and led the company organizationally as well as product-wise[5] from the start-up phase to a new maturity and performance level. In 2014, he founded the company Aureum AG and was active as investor, start-up coach and speaker. In 2021, he joined Stash AG as co-owner and CEO.

Education

After graduating from the Gymnasium Burgdorf in 1991, he studied Computer Science[3] at the University of Bern and graduated in 1997 with ‚Summa Cum Laude‘. In parallel, he deepened his knowledge of business administration[3], which is why he is entitled to the Master of Science in Computer Science (M Sc CS) in addition to the title Bachelor of Science in Business Administration (B Sc BA).

Career history

After independent activities in the field of IT training and application programming, he founded TeTrade AG in 1994 together with partners, which quickly developed into a medium-sized IT consulting and [2] project house. In 2002, Benno Burkhardt took over the management of Tarsec (soon renamed TeTrade (Zürich) AG), which was acquired by TeTrade AG, and shortly thereafter assumed overall responsibility for TeTrade AG.

Xmedia & Scout24

In 2005, he sold his shares in TeTrade AG to take over the management of Xmedia AG, the then owner of the Scout24 Group. Initially, the turnaround of Xmedia’s core business, the development and operation of web applications, was on the agenda. Just 18 months later, the restructuring was completed, the web design business sold, the third-party market share significantly increased and Xmedia was profitable again. After the new construction of all marketplaces AutoScout24.ch, ImmoScout24.ch, JobScout24.ch, FriendScout24.ch as well as Scout24.ch classifieds, the number of objects, number of visitors and the respective market shares increased significantly.

The merger with media swiss brought the Gate24 product family into the Xmedia portfolio. Here, too, the IT organizations first had to be brought together and, in order to be able to use synergies, a technological harmonization then had to be managed.

Ringier

Through the sale to Ringer in 2010, the scalable platforms based on the latest search technologies could also be used in international business. During this time, Benno Burkhardt was primarily concerned with the organic and inorganic development of Ringier’s digital business in the Eastern European countries of the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, Croatia and Serbia, as well as in Asia (China, Vietnam and the Philippines). The portfolio of more than 20 platforms was transferred to Ringer Axel Spring Media AG at the time of Ringier’s merger with Axel Springer in Eastern Europe.

Benno Burkhardt then dedicated himself to the digital transformation of the then print-heavy gate24.ch: he redesigned gate24’s products into a digital marketing package for SMEs, which included SEO components, SEM and SMM as well as a specifically produced moving image company portrait, and successfully trained the over 100-strong sales team in the direct sale of digital products. In this way, the decline in sales was stopped and ultimately the low-margin print sales, which continued to erode away, were more than compensated for by high-margin digital sales.

Publicitas

Thanks to this experience, Benno Burkhardt was brought to Publicitas AG in 2012 to lead this organization through the long overdue digital transformation as Managing Director Switzerland. After one year, the corresponding adjustments to the product portfolio had been defined and the necessary measures in the organization had been identified. However, these were never implemented. Publicitas was sold to the restructuring company Aurelius and is now bankrupt.

Comparis

Benno Burkhardt’s path led him to Comparis.ch AG in 2013, where he took over the management from the founder and until then operationally responsible. The transformation here was more organizational than digital. The founder-centric company had to be transformed into a participatively managed one. At the same time, Comparis expanded under his leadership into new business areas (mortgage, credit and insurance brokerage), which required consulting-intensive sales, i.e. the establishment of a sales team.

Aureum

To help other companies in the digital transformation, Benno has Burkhardt 2014 to be established in the company Aureum AG and now offers the entire service protfolio to the digital business successful: digital strategy, digital business models, (Self-) Disruption & digital Transformation.

For example, he formulated for the BLS the Digital Strategy and revolutionized travel in the Swiss public transport by inventing a smartphone based check-in be-out system, which was introduced as the lezzgo app and is now an important part of the SBB (Swiss Railsways) app. At Scout24 he has used his expertise in the field of insurance comparison, mortgages and private loans to launch 2019 the new vertical FinanceScout24.

He brings his expertise in Digitization, Disruption, Digital Business Models and Digital Marketing, as a start-up coach to the young entrepreneurs. He is is also helping with fundraising (Series A financing) and investing himself in start-ups. Thus, he manages a portfolio of several participations.
